In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
